Leadership   For   School   Change   (HTH 210)

PictureThis image depicts various connections course participants made to scholarly articles on leading school change efforts.
In this course we explored a variety of theories and ideas around leading change efforts in public schools.  As a practical component of the course, I worked on fostering a change in my current school setting around INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENT VOICE.

The Dream
Structures are in place to provide students with multiple opportunities to contribute to the school community in meaningful ways.

The Reasoning
Research shows that increasing student voice positively impacts school climate because students become more connected and engaged in learning.  In addition, student voice initiatives have been shown to increase student confidence and leadership, reengage alienated students, and effectively place value on diverse talents and leadership styles.

The Step
We randomly selected students to engage in a Student Listening Circle (SLC), which provided a structured opportunity for students to share their ideas with school staff members and co-plan an action.  The SLC had four distinct steps:  student practice, a listening circle, planning dialogue, and maintaining collaboration.   To read more about my project and our SLC, please follow the links below.
